This is a question that often comes up when discussing wooden construction. Many people fear that using wood as a building material means depleting natural resources and accelerating deforestation. The reality, however, is quite different.
Growing Forests and Responsible Management
Deforestation is a real problem, but it should be distinguished from the controlled and certified use of forest resources. Today, in the European Union, forests cover around 43% of the territory, equal to over 182 million hectares, and are steadily increasing. In Italy, according to the National Forest and Carbon Stock Inventory, forested areas have grown in recent decades and now cover about 36.7% of the national territory. The regions richest in forests are Tuscany, Piedmont, and Lombardy, which together account for almost 30% of the country’s forest heritage.
These data show that sustainable use of wood is not only possible but can contribute to the protection and enhancement of forests.

The key is sustainable forest certification. PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification) and FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certifications ensure that wood comes from responsibly managed forests, where every tree harvested is replaced with new plantings and biodiversity is protected.
Choosing certified wood means contributing concretely to a construction model that is more sustainable, circular, and transparent.
